Window tint for CDL & commercial drivers

CDL drivers and commercial vehicle operators are held to stricter standards than passenger cars. Here is how federal DOT rules layer on top of state tint laws for commercial vehicles.

Federal DOT rule: FMVSS 205 still applies

Every vehicle subject to federal DOT inspection must meet FMVSS 205. For the front windshield and driver-side / passenger-side windows, that is a 70% VLT minimum at the glass itself (not including aftermarket film).

In practice, this means aftermarket film on front side windows of commercial vehicles is typically prohibited under federal DOT inspection, regardless of what the state statute says.

Vehicles that trigger commercial DOT rules

  • Any vehicle over 10,001 lbs GVWR.
  • Any vehicle used to transport 8 or more passengers (including driver) for compensation.
  • Any vehicle used to transport 15+ passengers (not for compensation).
  • Any vehicle transporting hazardous materials requiring placarding.

CDL driver considerations

A CDL driver operating a personal passenger vehicle follows state tint rules like anyone else. When operating a commercial vehicle, the federal DOT rule applies on top of state rules. Any illegal tint on a commercial vehicle puts the driver’s CDL record at risk.

State commercial plate overlays

Some states apply additional rules to commercial-plated vehicles. For example, New York prohibits any aftermarket tint on the windshield and front side windows of commercial vehicles beyond the eyebrow strip. Confirm with your state DOT before tinting.

Window tint for CDL & commercial drivers — FAQ

Can a CDL driver have tinted windows on a personal car?

Yes. State rules apply to the personal vehicle like anyone else. Federal DOT rules only apply when operating commercial vehicles.

Does illegal tint affect my CDL record?

On a commercial vehicle, yes. Illegal tint caught during a DOT inspection is an equipment violation that goes on the motor carrier’s record and can affect the driver’s CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) score.

Are box trucks under 10,001 lbs exempt from federal DOT tint rules?

Mostly yes for federal DOT inspection. State passenger tint rules apply to smaller commercial trucks.
